Using AI to write SEO-optimized blogs
Are you using ChatGPT to do the actual writing of your blogs? Stop. Now. Does AI play a role in writing blogs that SEO loves? Absolutely. Is that role in writing the blog? Nope! The Red Brick team attended digital marketing training recently and we collected some tips to help you use AI in the right ways to help improve your website's SEO.
Search engines value authoritative content that indicates a high level of subject matter expertise, and they've become very good at detecting AI-written content. At the end of the day search engines are seeking to connect people to the best, highest-quality answers to their questions, and those are typically coming from human experts. Especially if your content is clinical or highly-specialized.
AI tools in the hands of a qualified expert can improve the quality of blog content. Here is a framework to help:
Keywords
Use a tool such as Semrush to discover what keywords your audience is searching for. Optimizing for these keywords is good for your SEO and can also help your content appear in AI-driven overview summaries. If your goal is to be included in Google's AI Overview just remember that this is zero-click content. So don't expect a bunch of click traffic.
Competitive Set
You can leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT to find competitive content that optimizes well for the keywords you want to be found for. Start a document with a list of the keywords you want to optimize for, and then add a section of high-quality, competitive content to the document.
Outline
Next, share your document with a tool like ChatGPT. Spend time writing a prompt to explain to ChatGPT the goals of your blog post, the keywords you want to optimize for, who your post is for, and share some examples of good competitive content. Ask ChatGPT to write you a detailed outline of what your blog should cover.
Your Time to Shine
Now it's your turn. Give the detailed outline to a qualified expert on your team to write the blog. Ensure they search for opportunities to cross-link to other content on your blog and external content supporting your message.
Editing
Tools such as Grammarly can help you edit your copy to ensure it's grammatically correct and aligns with your brand's tone.
Final Look
Share your final edited content with a tool like ChatGPT. Ask the tool to audit your content for keyword optimization.
Post and Monitor
Time to let that blog post fly! Monitor and tweak your post as needed. **Pro Tip** If you have a bunch of content on an existing blog, consider using this framework to refresh some of your existing content to improve its SEO quality.
Promote
Share the blog post with a tool like ChatGPT and ask it to write some baseline promotional copy for email and social media posts. It's okay to lean more heavily on AI tools for short-form promotional content, and sourcing copy from your original blog should result in higher quality outcomes from AI tools. Tweak the copy and spread the word!
If you are using a tool like HubSpot content hub, there are some cool tools that will allow you to remix content.
Here's one final tool from our training, a guide on how to optimize for Google's AI Overviews, enjoy!
