LinkedIn, Marching to the the Beat of It’s Own Drum Since 2002

It's no newsflash that LinkedIn is the go-to social platform for business networking. But here's a list of less obvious differences to consider before you hit schedule on that next post.

Target Audiences: LinkedIn has MANY fewer users than other social platforms. In 2023 LinkedIn reports 900 million members compared to almost 3 billion Facebook users. People don't sign up for LinkedIn to casually scroll through cat videos on a Saturday night. They visit LinkedIn with intent to network, catch up on professional trends, or learn something to further their professional development.

Advertising: It's much more expensive to advertise on LinkedIn vs. Facebook/Instagram, but the targeting is INCREDIBLE. You can even target employees at specific companies. For the right B2B campaigns it's worth adding LinkedIn to your tactical plan.

The Role of Employees: Companies who have a strong LinkedIn strategy typically have prescribed ways that employees share posts to amplify their message. If you're just posting on LinkedIn and don't have your team sharing your posts with their thoughts, consider expanding your strategy.

It's Slower: Writing 10 Tweets a day (or "posts" as X calls them these days) got you sweating bullets? LinkedIn moves much slower and your content can stick around in user feeds for a reeeeeally long time. Most of our clients post 1-2 times per week on LinkedIn and leverage an employee sharing strategy to extend the life of their messages. Here’s more LinkedIn stats for a full rundown of demographics, platform crossover data and more.

Did you know that 60% of LinkedIn users are between 25-34 years old? That's right. Millennials are the largest user group on LinkedIn worldwide (we were surprised too). In fact, only 2.9% of people over 55 use LinkedIn.

Inspo Post #1: Slick Ad SlickText

I've seen this ad probably 5 times and every single time I stop to read it. SlickText gets a big thumbs up for creating a "digital rubbernecking" effect. It's just like the "oops" subject lines, we all want to see what was so bad it had to be blurred out.

Inspo Post #2: A Nice Reminder

Unlike other social platforms, people are hungry for educational snippets on LinkedIn. This one caught our attention for a few reasons:

✅ We all like throwbacks and this one hit just right (especially for we millennial LinkedIn power users).

✅ The way the caption cut off was just BEGGING for the "read more..." click. It cut off right at "1,000 songs in your pocket > 16 GB of MP4 storage...".

✅ This was a great use of sharing content, but adding a caption that made it educational and relevant. It wasn't just "look at this ad, cool right"? It gave us commentary to be better marketers.

Inspo Post #3: Standing Ovation for a Hilarious Cross-Platform 🔥 Burn WITH an Important Message

What an incredible use of pop culture to further a corporate message. For the non German speakers the caption on the image reads "Protect our wildlife before it's too late". Just because LinkedIn is all about business doesn't mean we have to be boring. This post got significantly more engagement than WWF's typical messages.

Inspo Post #4:  Memes...They Work on LinkedIn too, and They are Fantastic

Okay so some of the LinkedIn memes are a little cringe worthy. But not this one! This is a great example of using humor and pop culture to connect with an audience.

Inspo Post #5:  A Scroll-Worthy Carousel Post

This 12-page carousel post was full of informational tidbits. As you can see, the creative wasn't very fancy. But it was very easy to read and each image begged you to scroll to the next. Trevor was able to tell a long story that would never have worked in a single post that was engaging, and ultimately lead to a downloadable that you could get just by commenting. We'll definitely be taking notes from this one!

Inspo Post #6:  A Welcome Comedic Break

LinkedIn is so full of "look at my new product!" and "check out this webinar!" that these simple, funny posts really stand out. The New Yorker does a great job at this. If you want to add a little levity to your feed we highly recommend giving them a follow.

Inspo Post #7: They Turned Their Joke Up to 11 and We're Loving the Creativity

Deep Eddy Vodka created a fake virtual conference, the Virtually Optimized Developmental Knowledge Assembly (V.O.D.K.A Conference) that will block your schedule for the whole day on Friday, August 25th so you can skip work and party with your friends. So. Good. They even set up an Eventbrite booking link.
